19. The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon

Before Series 6, viewers were used to light-hearted series openers that gently ushered in a new season. However, this preconception was blown right out the water when The Impossible Astronaut came out of Lake Silencio and killed the Doctor within ten minutes of their favourite show returning... Hitting the ground running right from the off, this energetic two-parter sets up the complex timey-wimey stylings that would carry all the way through Series 6. 60s America makes for a great backdrop and for once it doesn't look like Wales as the production team actually went stateside here which really aids to the cinematic feel of these episodes. And, of course, the story finally introduces the sinister Silence who... uh, sorry, what were we saying?
