9. Turn Left

Series 4's Turn Left is a brilliant episode for many reasons - particularly the return of Rose Tyler and putting Catherine Tate in the spotlight. Probably the biggest reason, however, is how it brings any Doctor Who fan's biggest nightmare to life - a world without the Doctor. Throughout the episode, viewers boggle at this battered version of the Earth, dilapidated by all the alien incursions that the Doctor was not around to prevent (the crash of the Titanic, the Sontarans' stratagem, etc...). The Time Beetle is not going to win any awards for best alien but the scares in this episode come not from the monster but rather from the lack of our hero.
