3. The Doctor's Wife

Despite all the changes that the show has gone through during its history, there are always two constants - the Doctor and his trusty blue box. Except in The Doctor's Wife, of course, in which - for one time only - that blue box becomes a woman. Fantasy icon Neil Gaiman's quirky redefinition of the relationship between the Time Lord and his TARDIS is really the sort of story that can - and should - only be done once, lest it take the shine off of it. As it stands, it's hilarious and heart-breaking in equal measure to see the Doctor gain the perfect woman for him only to lose her shortly after. Here fans finally get to know the character of the TARDIS and it turns out that she was even bigger on the inside than they thought she was.
