5 Doctor Who Writers Who Should Return For Series 9 (Plus 5 New Ones)
10. Mark Gatiss
Mark Gatiss is what you could call an anomaly in the Doctor Who universe. A life long fan of the series, he is also the only person to have contributed to the Doctor's adventures both on and off the screen, with an impressive array of written episodes as well as a handful of guest roles under his belt. While his psychical appearances include Lazarus in The Lazarus Experiment and as the somewhat unrecognisable Gantok in The Wedding of River Song, to date Mark has also penned six episodes for the revived series, all of which have become instantaneous modern classics. In 2005 he took Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor to Cardiff in 1869 where he encountered another great writer - possibly the greatest of them all - in the form of Charles Dickens, and over the coming years Mark would take the Time Lord on escapades featuring soul-stealing aliens hidden in the television signals (The Idiot's Lantern) and a new paradigm of deadly Daleks (Victory of the Daleks). Last year he was tasked with introducing the iconic Ice Warriors, last seen on screen in 1974, to a modern audience in Cold War. In addition, his indisputable knowledge of the Doctor Who mythology was put to good use during the show's 50th anniversary festivities when he recreated the story of its origins in the critically acclaimed and award-winning docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time. Mark has already proven that he's got what it takes to create a humdinger of a Doctor Who adventure, so let's hope he gets another chance to show us what he's made of in Series 9. It helps that he's best mates with Steven Moffat, too!
