5 Things We NEED From Christopher Eccleston's Doctor Who Return
1. Pre-'Rose' Stories
The Ninth Doctor has a very limited timeline. You can only have stories set before or after Rose, due to the companion being carried over into the Tenth Doctor’s adventures. This is different to other incarnations, where multiple companions have left spaces for gaps, such as for the Tenth Doctor where gaps can be filled between the travels of Rose, Martha and Donna.
So, the best place for exploration of the Ninth Doctor is before Rose, set just after the regeneration of the War Doctor. This is, largely, a very unexplored section of the Doctor’s timeline, and is the perfect place to see the weight of the Time War, as mentioned before.
A huge matter that needs addressing is how come after an incarnation of not wanting to be the Doctor, how can this incarnation all of a sudden feel like he deserves to be the Doctor again, now just choosing to hide the guilt of this whole previous incarnation.
Now, this era realistically cannot be huge, as in Rose, the Ninth Doctor looks in the mirror and is stunned by the size of his ears, which implies he has recently regenerated. This doesn’t mean nothing can happen before ‘Rose’, if anything this could just allow for stories which keep the Doctor so busy that he gets no time to stop after the Time War, and Rose is actually the first time he finally slows down.
The Time War is a huge event, so for it all to simply be okay seems a little far-fetched. To get several stories to see the Doctor, the last of the Time Lords, cleaning up after the war would be fascinating, and could provide some truly original adventures.
But I think most fans are in agreement, no matter what happens, no one will complain to a new full series worth of audio dramas which sees Eccleston back in the role he walked away from. It is truly fantastic to have you back, Chris.
