The real world tragic use of slavery by White Americans to enslave African Americans in the United States is a well documented horror that was put to an end at the conclusion of the American Civil War in 1865. However, in Confederate, the CSA has continued its legality and use well into the modern era, evolving it into a modern institution used by individuals and corporations.

We will be seeing this modern slavery first hand as characters announced for the series include slave owning corporate heads, abolitionists, slave hunters, and freedom fighters. This will depict slavery from both sides and if David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' prior work on Game of Thrones is an indicator, they will likely not shy away from the brutal reality of slavery.

Black people in the CSA are likely used as cattle and their plight will probably be the center of what promises to be a controversial show. As evidenced by the negative reactions to the show's announcement, many are skeptical that HBO will be able to deliver on creating a story and depiction of slavery that is accurate and respectful. Benioff and Weiss will have to execute this area of the show's universe carefully and cautiously but if they are able to do so, Confederate will be a success.
