5 Ways Community Was Way Better This Season

2. Actual Jokes

Well, it's the weirdness, the heart and the fact that the show is hilarious. As the "com" part of "sitcom" suggests. Having lost the majority of the writing staff following season four, Community more than made up for the absence of Megan Ganz and co by bringing on veterans from the likes of Key & Peele, The Colbert Report, American Dad! and Dan Harmon's animated show Ricky and Morty. Being funny is a pre-requisite of a comedy show, but it's something that sometimes gets overlooked when it comes to Community - certainly by its fourth season - which is both stupid and a shame. The show has one of the all-time great ensemble casts, from the broadness of Jim Rash's Dean (who was great in these twelve episodes, even when his costume changes were kept to a minimum; his freestyle rap was a highlight) to the way Donald Glover could sell achingly meta lines about Zach Braff daring to leave Scrubs "after everything did for him". "You know where he was for most of my birthdays? A little place that rhymes with 'not there.'" "Times Square?"; "Why are there books in the an air vent? "Why is there hot sauce in the bathroom? It's Greendale!"; "You're going to pull a Dane Cook in one of those three movies he was in about Dane Cook getting laid by accident! Only, it's not a Dane Cook movie, Jeff, because this time, someone's watching." There's so many amazingly sharp, clever and hilarious exchanges in this season that it's hard to stop quoting them when you start. Oh, okay, one more: "Welcome to the labyrinth, kid--only there ain't no puppets or bisexual rock stars down here."
