Emily Coutts is instantly recognizable on-screen as the cybernetically enhanced Keyla Detmer, conn officer abord the USS Discovery. She started life on the ill-fated USS Shenzhou, where the Battle of the Binary Stars left her permanently scarred.
Thankfully, the experience didn't put off Coutts! She is a Canadian actress from Toronto. and auditioned for the part like many others, having to wait several months to hear anything back due to the delay in production.
She is an actress and filmmaker, appearing in projects like Crimson Peak, alongside Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. She also produced and appeared in a film called Barn Wedding.
Going into season three, Detmer bid farewell to her family in Such Sweet Sorrow, and now has entered a brand new future with the rest of the crew. Thankfully, the second season of Discovery began expanding her character in a way that season one was lacking. Coutts brings a quiet intensity to the role, ever-present while never stealing the spotlight on the bridge. Her friendship with Owosekun is already a highlight on the show - something we very much hope will get further room to grow.
