6 New Stars Of Star Trek To Watch Out For

3. Oyin Oledejo - Owosekun

Oyin Oledejo plays Joann Owosekun, Ops officer aboard the USS Discovery's bridge. While in the first season her role was a relatively small one, the second season allowed her to expand that considerably, starting with the second episode, New Eden.

One the biggest critiques against the portrayal of the characters in the first season was that many of them had so little to do that they ended up being, for want of a better word, soundboards. Once given the chance to shine, Oledejo has proved that she has what it takes to shine.

Hailing from Lagos, she was ready to pack in acting when she got the role on Star Trek: Discovery. She was cleaning houses and landscaping, then was told she landed the part in Star Trek. Since then, her passion for the craft has returned in full force.

She is something of a success story story - she had been studying Law, and realised that it wasn't for her. Then, she got a job in a theatre box officer, before being quickly promoted. She watched her first Opera and thought 'these folks look like they're having fun', which encouraged her to apply to acting school. However, she had only small acting credit on-screen, with several theatre productions, before landing the role that changed her life - through a self-taped audition.

Here is a star in the making, and fingers crossed season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery will allow her to continue to shine!
