3. The Merchandise
One of the key factors behind the Turtles success is their merchandising, which has raked in an incredible $475 million dollars in retail sales within the past year. Turtles toys have had plenty of great gimmicks in the past, such as pizza-launching vehicles, plastic katanas and hordes of action figures in all kinds of different scenarios; in space, the Wild West and the military. Thankfully though, the current merchandise available has yet to approach ridiculous themes (yet). It's actually a great time to be a collector, thanks to Lego acquiring the license to produce Turtles sets. For the first time ever, fans can actually own a Shredder minifigure, and there's a neat assortment in the Turtles Lego collection so far, such as the Shrellraiser set, one of Baxter Stockman's massive robotic mechs and even the awesome sewer lair. That's not all though, as there's plenty of sets which have rumoured to have a 2014 release. Those sets include the $60 Turtle Sub Undersea Chase, the $100 Turtle Lair Invasion and a Karai Bike Escape set, amongst many. The opportunity to own a Karai minifigure is impossible to pass up on. However, if you're not into Lego, there's always Playmates' range of collectible figures based on the current show. Their first series included the original four Turtles without any gimmicks, and they remarkably became some of the best toys of the year, thanks to the cheap price, articulation and decent paint applications. Some figures are questionably disproportionate, but overall the series is fairly well done. Fans can even purchase their very own Playmates sewer lair, which is over 1 metre in height and complete with a street level, plenty of projectiles and a fancy zipline. It's a great time to be a fan of the Turtles, as fans of all ages have available a vast array of goodies. Turtles merchandise has always been pretty decent, if you disregard some of the horrible gimmicks. Once you end up watching the show, you'll probably want some of the merchandise, so get on it already and start building.
