6 Reasons You Should Have Watched Netflix's Daybreak
4. It's Very Funny
One of the bonuses of the subversive nature of Daybreak is that it's incredibly funny and that, in a way, is its most subversive attribute of all. Sure, we've seen zombie comedies before, but the fact that this show is essentially full of tropes and stereotypes without actually becoming any of them results in it catching viewers off-guard a lot - making for a more enjoyable experience.
Are there hordes of zombies chasing the protagonists through the streets? Sure. Is it terrifying? Hell no. The show thrives on using all of the typical zombie tropes and then turning them on their head for completely different outcomes. These aren't your typical zombies; they're mindless caricatures that, through clever writing, are essentially examples of how mindless modern society is on the verge of becoming - reflected through the fact that the ghoulies are merely mindless adults sentenced to a life (or death?) of mindlessly repeating their last ever sentence over and over again. It's hilarious but thought-provoking.
Also, remember those monologues we talked about? Yeah, well those are often the key to some of its funniest moments. Josh's musings allow us to see that, although he is the typical good boy most of the time, his internal voice is a lot quirkier than you'd expect it to be, and that paves the way for some surprisingly great humour.
However, the supporting characters incite the biggest laughs as, from Eli's hilariously dumb (but surprisingly clever) view of the zombified world to the fact that Wesley's newfound pacifist behaviour couldn't have come at a worse time, the show is rife with genuinely laugh-out-loud moments.
