7 Doctor Who Spin-Offs That Could Replace Class

1. The Eighth Doctor

The idea of an Eighth Doctor spin-off series has become near-legendary in Doctor Who circles. Despite it never officially having been on the cards, fans have been calling for a return for Paul McGann for years. We have to hope that eventually the BBC will listen to the cries on the internet and make it happen.

Though he only appeared in a single TV movie back in 1996, fans fell for McGann's incarnation of the Time Lord and many were upset when he was snubbed for Christopher Eccleston come the 2005 revival. Thankfully, Eight was eventually brought back for a special mini-episode to tie in with the 50th anniversary in 2013. Unfortunately, despite this being the perfect backdoor pilot for a proper comeback, he has never returned to the screen since.

It's a real shame as the Eighth Doctor holds so much promise. Crucially, he never became directly involved with the Time War, meaning a series focusing on him wouldn't need to cough up a movie-sized budget every week to depict the intergalactic conflict. However, the Doctor's place on the periphery of the fighting would still allow the show to explore the fallout and effects of the War.

Ah, but wouldn't jumping around the Doctor's timeline confuse people? Well, a few years ago maybe, but contemporary movie franchises like Marvel, DC and Star Wars frequently hop around their own histories and casual viewers manage to keep up. You could even say Doctor Who needs a series like this to stay up to date with the high-concept cinematic universes littering pop culture at the moment.
