8 Best TV Series From 2020 That Totally Slipped Under The Radar

I Am Not Okay With This

Okay, technically this debuted in late 2019 - however, it didn't reach the US until November 2020 - so I'm counting it.

This Way Up is one of a few series made by comedians these days that tries to be the next Fleabag or Catastrophe. Fortunately for its creator and star, Aisling Bea, it totally works where so many others have failed.

The show follows a young Irish woman called Àine, who has just left rehab after trying to kill herself during a particularly low moment in her life. As she returns to work and the real world, her upbeat nature is tested by more of life's little problems but also presented with new horizons through various interactions.

The navigation of her mental health and overbearing, but caring, sister is a delight to watch and something that feels very real without slipping into forced drama. Plus, when you have a supporting cast that features Tobias Menzies and Sharon Horgan, you know that you're onto something good.

Funny? Yes. Awkward? Completely. Hugely sweet without becoming saccharine and therefore emotionally tactile? That's the best bit. This Way Up defies conventions and becomes an underrated jewel.

This Way Up is to be found on 4oD, with a second season en route.
