3. The Girlfriend Experience
Inspired by the Steven Soderbergh movie barely anyone saw, The Girlfriend Experience is one of the most daring shows on TV; dark, compelling and thoroughly underrated.
The first season follows a law intern who takes work as a high-class escort and uncovers a scandal at the legal firm she works at by day. It had it all: sex, lies, videotapes and a fantastic breakout performance from Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough.
The Girlfriend Experience debuted to strong reviews in 2016 and returned for an equally underrated second series this year, which is still airing. In a bold move befitting of the show, directors Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz threw out the format for season two and chose to focus on new characters and narratives that play out parallel to one another.
The two storylines that run concurrently are different in subject matter, visual style and tone, giving the second season more of an anthology feel, but the same boundary-pushing themes underpin both tales.
