8 Doctor Who Companions Who Should Make A Return

4. Ace

Ace is considered by many to be the first 'modern' companion of Doctor Who, being the last companion to travel with The Doctor before the show's cancellation in 1989. While she hasn't appeared on the show since its cancellation, her character has continued to be used in novels and audio dramas. At one point she even became a Time Lord before having her memory wiped. She was a favourite among fans, truly growing during her time in the TARDIS.

While Ace has seen an extensive continuation of her story in other media, the true reasoning behind her departure from the TARDIS is still unknown. An adventure where The Doctor and Ace reunite could actually explore why Ace no longer travels with The Doctor, providing a close to that chapter of Doctor Who and finally giving an answer to long-term fans.

It would be great to see Ace return to the main series. Russel T Davies even planned for her to appear in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, but unfortunately these plans never came to be due to Elizabeth Sladen's passing. But there doesn't seem to be any reason that Ace couldn't return to the current series, and actress Sophie Aldred even expressed interest in the prospect back in January 2020. It just seems an obvious choice to explore, so fingers crossed that maybe one day Chibnall and Aldred can sit down and discuss it.
