8 Doctor Who Episodes Ruined By Their Endings

1. Love & Monsters

Love & Monsters has a reputation for being one of the worst episodes in Doctor Who history, and while it's certainly a contender, it's not as though the entire episode is an irredeemable trainwreck.

The premise - a group of strangers, fascinated by the Doctor, form a club to try and track him down - is a strong one, and it's interesting to see how the ordinary citizens of the Whoniverse perceive all the alien chaos that occurs on a regular basis. Sure, the Tenth Doctor could've had more screen time, but the characters are entertaining enough to carry the story - and you can't go wrong with a bit of ELO.

Unfortunately, the episode's good work does not extend into its painfully low-budget finale, in which the monster-of-the-week - basically, Peter Kay in a green fat suit - runs through the back alleys of Cardiff, screeching in an annoying auto-tuned voice.

It's the kind of scene that gives Doctor Who a bad reputation with people who aren't fans of the show - the people who think it's just a silly kids programme with naff special effects. We're certainly not saying that the first two-thirds of Love & Monsters is top-tier Doctor Who. It's not. But the ending is the worst thing about it, and if it had been a bit better? Then the episode would've been just fine.

Not exactly high praise, but "fine" is far better than "makes you want to claw your eyeballs out".

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
