5. Doctorin' The TARDIS
Back in 1988, a band called The Time Lords released an electronic pop song that, while being critically panned, managed to get so much commercial success that it still made it to number 1 of the UK singles chart. Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, known in the band as Time Boy and Lord Rock, managed to combine the iconic Doctor Who theme music, Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll (Part Two) and sections of Blockbuster! by Sweet and Let's Get Together Tonite by Steve Walsh to create a song which is pretty much as timey-wimey as they come. According the Drummond, the pair "went into the studio on a Monday, thinking we were going to make a house track, a regular underground dance house track using the Doctor Who theme tune... but we then realised it was in triplet time and you can't have house tracks in triplet time. The only beat that would work with it was the Glitter beat. By Tuesday evening we realised we had a number one and we just went totally for the lowest common denominator". The music video is just as strange, featuring a Ford Galaxie American police car blaring its siren throughout the two minutes of music and being chased by very poorly built Daleks that look like theyre composed more of cardboard than Dalekanium. Still, the single was a (commercial) success and spurned The Time Lords to release a book documenting their creative process, aptly named: The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way). Oh well, you cant really dislike the song too much. If you buy anything that puts "probably the most nauseating record in the world" right on their album cover, you sort of know what to expect.
