8 Little Known Tics In Jon Bernthal's Performance That Made MCU's Punisher Awesome

1. He Learnt To Fear Frank Castle

Perhaps the most interesting window into Bernthal's performance, however, isn't the fact he isolated himself for so long, but why he sought the character out in the first place.

The Punisher is a pretty scary person, and undoubtedly one of the more intimidating roles to take on from Marvel's library. It seems as though the actor himself was of this opinion too, mentioning in that same interview with EW that he's not particularly interested in roles that don't force him to leave his comfort zone.

"With most of these parts, it’s just that they really scare me, and I want to try to find the thing that scares me the most, where I feel like, 'I couldn’t do that, and maybe somebody else could maybe do it better than me.' I really do think it’s important when you play a character like Frank to exercise your muscles and get out of that, and to work with different people. But yeah, it’s been crazy."

This is a really interesting thing to note, because you get the impression when watching Punisher that Frank Castle might even be afraid of himself. There's that realisation that he's sort of a living weapon, and that once he gets going, he's almost impossible to stop.

It is scary, and it could maybe even be that fear that has made Bernthal's tenure in the role so convincing. Here's hoping Punisher Season 2 won't be the one that signals its end.
