5. Quatermass - 1979

The conclusion of Nigel Kneale's Quatermass series, 1979's mini series Quatermass sees the titular professor Bernard Quatermass head to London to search for his missing grandaughter. Set in the then not too distant future of the end of the 20th century, civilisation across the world has largely collapsed, with corrupt gangs and privatised police officers ruling the streets.

Whilst searching for his daughter, Quatermass discovers a cult of young people known as the planet people who travel to a stone circle with the hope that they will be transported to a new better planet which they will rule over. All of a sudden a huge bright light beams down to Earth, leaving only the dust of these young people behind, with Quatermass left to find out what happened to the missing people.

It then turns out that the same beam of light has seemingly extracted millions of people in similar locations across the world. Quatermass then is left to find a solution to the mysterious disappearences.

Despite being produced in 1979, Quatermass has an incredibly high production value, with a budget adjusted for inflation at around £7.5 million, making it one of the most expensive television shows ever made at the time.
