5. It Calls Bays and Thomas's Artistic Integrity In To Question
Both Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, creators of HIMYM, are whole-heartedly backing this idea for a spin-off: they have taken to Twitter to express their hopes that '#HIMYD becomes its own magical wonderful thing, and the two shows stand on their own side by side.' How is that possible guys? Firstly, if they're stood side by side, they're not stood on their own. But more importantly, surely they are relying on all their fans from HIMYM to follow them to their new show BECAUSE of the similarities? It seems like they are hoping to mimic the success of HIMYM by mimicking the show itself whilst simultaneously trying to assert that the show will be completely different just so they don't look like they have 'sold out to the man'. As well as this, they have both been quoted as saying that they agreed to do the spin-off because they are still having so much fun on HIMYM. It sounds like we won't be the only ones on the rebound. Thomas says the spin-off 'will be very much its own beast, but there is something comforting in knowing if you have some great idea for another love story [...] there might be another place to tell a new version of that.' So rather than create something entirely new or doing the spin off because they believe in its artistic merit, they are determined to stay in their HIMYM bubble because they're not ready to let go of the original show.
