8 Scary TV Treats Coming This Halloween

1. Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

When & Where: Netflix from 26th October

Every millennial's favourite teenage witch is back this Halloween in a decidedly darker form thanks to Netflix's gothic reboot of the Archie Comics adolescent sorceress.

Created by Archie's Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the original 2014 comic Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was inspired by the success of the similarly horror-centric alternative world comic Afterlife With Archie, part of the wholesome comic company's attempt to reach for an edgier audience.

With Aguirre-Sacasa enjoying a hit developing Archie into the darker edged teen TV drama Riverdale, it's probably no surprise that his chilling take on Sabrina's Greendale wasn't far behind.

Initially developed by Aguirre-Sacasa for Riverdale's teen-oriented network The CW, with the help of Riverdale and Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti's Berlanti productions, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has ended up on Netflix instead, where the whole thing will be available to stream the week before Halloween.

Mad Men and Feud's Kiernan Shipka stars as the eponymous teen having to choose on her sixteenth birthday between her half-mortal and half-witch sides, just as in the original kid-friendly Nickelodeon series, but here the inspiration leans more heavily on classic supernatural horrors of the 1960s and 70s such as Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist.

Other familiar characters include Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto as Aunts Hilda and Zelda and Sabrina's black cat familiar Salem (unlikely still to be played by a bad puppet with a penchant for snarky quips). Former Doctor Who nemesis Michelle Gomez also features as Satan.
