Long running TV shows often fall into bad habits. Pumping out over twenty episodes every year isnt easy, so if a plot device is found that can easily generate some ideas then it will regularly abused. 24 had Kim being kidnapped about twice an episode, The Walking Dead had Karl running into the woods whenever they needed a subplot and Star Trek had time travel. A LOT of time travel. This device has been used repeatedly in both the shows and the movies, with the film reboot going so far as to use it as an excuse to take the original characters on brand new adventures. At this stage there really isnt much life left in the old gimmick though, and there are only so many temporal vortexes and black holes one franchise can encounter before people get annoyed. The smart move would be to stick to the future for now, and if the show is a success maybe try a time travel episode or two when the audience is comfortable.
