8 Things Yellowjackets Does Better Than Lost
4. The Episode Count
Many of the problems with Lost can be traced back to its initial success in popular culture. It was one of the most-talked about series in the mid-2000s and, as with so much network television at the time, was re-commissioned as twenty-plus episode seasons. Eventually, the creative team were able to reduce the episode count and bring the story back into focus.
With a lean ten episodes per season, Yellowjackets could avoid the problems of Lost's bloated early seasons. It allows for the writers to focus in on the story that they want to tell without having to introduce a hitherto unseen group of survivors or a charismatic Scottish vault dweller with which to pad out each episodes.
It also reduces the risk of the wild tangents that Lost was often prone to (did anyone really need to know the origins of Jack's tattoos?) Did we need to get to know the full story of Nikki and Paulo? Without Lost's baggy pacing, Yellowjackets can keep the many mysteries ticking along in a compelling way that won't alienate the audience.
