7. Gotham

Where We Left Off: Maroni is dead, Fish Mooney is apparently dead, and Carmine Falcone is retired, leaving a void of organized crime in Gotham which the Penguin has ambitions to fill. Barbara Kean, Gordon's ex, went completely serial-killer bonkersAlso, Bruce found a Batcave and remains about eleven years away from becoming Batman.

Where We're Going: Season 2 is dubbed "the season of villains." Among them: Theo Galavan, an insidious billionaire who may or may not be Ra's Al Ghul, his children Tabitha and Theo, Penguin mentoring Catwoman, Edward Nigma losing control, and Jerome Valeska, who may or may not be the Joker. Plus Barbara, apparently. At least one thing's going right for law and order in Gotham, though: Captain Nathaniel Barnes (an ironically cast Michael Chiklis) is all about cleaning up the force.

Latest News: Beyond more villains, Gotham intends to be a less procedural and faster-paced show this season. Several previews have been released, prompting a lot of fan dissection.

Tomatometer Score: 90. Gotham is a mixed bag, with several electrifying performances and lots of good ones, but often nonsensical plots and too much reliance on the Batman mythos. And Barbara wasn't exactly sympathetic even before her latest turn. Still, Ben McKenzie was honest and correct about Season 1's flaws in a way that indicates Season 2 will turn things around.

Returning: September 21.
