9 Great TV Characters Underused In Their Show's Final Season

8. Andy Bernard - The Office

Lindsay Bluth
NBC

After Michael Scott left The Office, Andy ultimately took over as both the Dunder Mifflin Scranton regional manager and the show's lead character. Though the show was never the same without Michael, Andy does a solid job anchoring down the eighth season.

However, when Season 9 rolled around, actor Ed Helms had scheduling conflicts with The Hangover Part III. As such, Andy was awkwardly written off early in the season, leaving on a boat with his younger brother and abandoning his branch, as well as his girlfriend Erin. Since much of Andy's time as regional manager showed him developing more responsibility, this felt like a leap backwards for his character arc.

When Andy comes back towards the end of the season, he receives a fair share of focus, and ultimately a nice ending in the series finale. However, it's still unsatisfying that he has to miss half of the final season, effectively flatlining his development.
