9 Things You Learn Rewatching Game Of Thrones Season 8
3. The Long Night Is Spectacular But Dumb
Controversial words next: The Long Night is the best episode-length battle that Game of Thrones has produced (Battle of the Bastards is the best battle but it wasn't the length of the episode). It is truly a phenomenal achievement, and the blood, sweat & tears of everyone involved is on display, creating a night of intense action, excellent storytelling, and brilliant twists and turns.
With all that said though, all can see how stupid some of the decisions of the characters are in regards to battle strategy. First being sending their entire cavalry of 40,000 strong Dothraki in the first move of the fight to perish against a seemingly infinite hoard of undead. Not to mention the catapults their own allies were firing into the path which could have hit any of them at any time.
Then there's the idea of putting all the non-fighters in the crypt for their safety, while knowing full well they're fighting an enemy with the power to raise the dead. As is known by now, that decision comes back to bite them.
That said though, the effort is noticed and felt in every frame. The frightening moments are effective, the action is palpable and tense, and the emotional moments hit home every time, particularly the deaths of Theon Greyjoy, Jorah Mormont and the gorgeous final walk of Melisandre.
