9 Worst Times TV Shows Went Meta
4. Supernatural Goes Slash Fiction
Supernatural has never been afraid of mind-bending meta turns. In fact, few dramas have ever gone to such committed lengths as the series, with its fairly-frequent outings into postmodern territory.
These excursions tend to offer a fun change of pace. In the episode “The French Mistake”, Sam and Dean are transported to an alternate reality where they are actors on a show called "Supernatural", with the suspicious names Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. The 200th episode was dedicated to fan fiction (it was called "Fan Fiction", strangely enough), and finds Marie admitting to not liking the meta episodes. This hasn't stopped the creators though: the most recent episode was a Scooby-doo crossover.
It hasn't always worked, though. Perhaps the most distractingly smug example is found in the episode "The Monster at the End of this Book", which sees Sam and Dean spending an entire minute and a half discussing online slash fiction about themselves. That’s a long time in TV-years.
