American Dad: The 10 Best Characters

5. Father Donovan

Father Donovan Remember when I said the Turlington Detectives were as grainy as we were gonna get? I misspoke. Anyway, a friend of mine has always wanted to be a priest, and I'm constantly reminding him that such a career path is impossible because, a) He can find no satisfactory evidence that an afterlife exists, b) He firmly believes in the Theory of Evolution, and, c) He is an atheist. But then again, so is Father Donovan, and he's pastor at the Langley Falls church. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I think one of the main attributes that all pastors have come to have in common is that they believe in God. But Father Donovan heroically surpassed this religious stereotype, and became a church leader without any solid knowledge of religion at all. In fact, the lack of propriety he shows towards his occupation knows no bounds, once visiting Francine in his Speedos with a case of beer and asking, "So am I gonna see some jugs, or am I wasting my time here?" But these are the kind of things that make Father Donovan such a delight. Not only does he not believe in God, but he almost goes out of his way to shun the idea of religion altogether, such as when he cuts short Grandpa Smith's funeral because he had a golf game to get to. His eulogies also consist of mundane information gained from the deceased's driving license, a great example being when he described Walter as being a dear old friend because he was "qualified to drive a motorcycle." Despite being such an intriguing character, Father Donovan is the only member of our top 10 who is widely believed to have passed on. Even though his allegiance to religion was, shall we say, shaky, he assisted Stan in his attempts to kill the Anti-Christ, and ended up being crushed to death in an orphanage. That's how he would have wanted to go, but he shall live on in the form of being an honoured member of this list.
