When it first aired in 2011, American Horror Story immediately announced itself to the world as being big, bold and brave in the face of controversy. The content is frequently outrageous, and skirts the line between acceptability and otherwise, though it is always done with a confident theatrical swagger that is the show's most enduring appeal. Acts of sheer brutality and deeply disturbing psychological plays are carried out swiftly, and we as an audience are made to accept it quickly. Season one saw the show deal with a sympathetic character who happened to be the ghost of a high school shooter. Add to that that one of the main characters murdering his pregnant mistress and you've got a number of episodes of prime time controversy. Season two brought us a Nazi doctor conducting experiments upon mental patients, and of course the whole Bloodyface story arc saw a psychotic killer raping a lesbian women he was holding prisoner.
