Arrow: 9 Mistakes It Must Avoid In Season 4

9. The Tone

Being a €˜dark€™ superhero show or movie doesn€™t necessarily have to be the criticism it seems to be these days. A lot of this stems from Man Of Steel, and the seemingly joyless direction Warner Bros. and DC want to take their properties in. But doing it in a darker, grittier way can work on screens big and small, as we saw in Christopher Nolan€™s Batman trilogy and, more recently, Netflix/Marvel€™s Daredevil. We also saw it in season 2 of Arrow. Season 3, however, wasn€™t so much dark as it was just plain miserable. Obviously a large part of that was driven by Sara€™s death, but that cloud hung over Starling City the entire season. That The Flash came along like a younger, funnier brother probably didn€™t help, and indeed Marc Guggenheim €“ the show€™s creator €“ has confirmed that season 4 will have more lightness and humour. This will allow the characters of the show to loosen up a bit, and maybe actually allow themselves some moments of happiness, and make the show easier and more enjoyable to watch in the process.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
