Arrow Season 4 Finale: 12 Big Questions We're Asking After 'Schism'
1. What Hope Is There Hope For Season 5 (And The Show As A Whole)?
Season 4 of Arrow wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't all that good either, and it's certainly a long way from the sheer awesomeness that was Season 2.
It made a lot of mistakes in Season 3, and repeated them in Season 4. While it tried to make a move into the light, it was still shrouded by darkness. It had Oliver offer hope to the people of Star City, but most of Team Arrow were left with none. There still seemed like too many episodes for the story it wanted to tell.
The series has shown at times that it's still capable of doing something very good, but it's rare glimpses, and too-often dominated by plotlines that make no sense, strange out-of-character decisions (or other character motivations bashing us over the head, like Oliver beating himself up for his own dark failings), and too much focus on the soap opera elements.
The show is getting probably more criticism than ever before, it's divided its fanbase on a number of issues (most obviously 'Olicity'), so is there hope for Season 5? Stephen Amell has spoken of going "back-to-basics", and maybe that's what the show needs. If they can recapture the action, personal stakes, and great chemistry between the leads that made the show so entertaining, then yes there is hope, but it remains to be seen how capable they are of doing that.
