Ballers Season 2: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Tone Is Too Light

Ballers Dwayne Johnson Rob Corddry

Ballers is a dramedy at its core, focusing on the shenanigans of Spencer and co., but always leaning back on comedy to ensure things don't get too dark.

While this makes sense to an extent, even Entourage (the show Ballers is so frequently compared to) eventually introduced more heavy storylines in order to heighten the drama, and Ballers will need to do the same if it wants longevity.

On one hand, it's just great, easy fun seeing The Rock in awesome suits and partying with sexy women, but the more unpleasant side of the sports industry (drug addiction and financial woes) is largely only hinted at.

That's not to say that Ballers should be misery porn, but it's so scared of exploring darkness in any real depth that without a substantial evolution down the line, the show could end up feeling vapid and one-note in the long run.
