Sometimes a Great Notion delivers no less than four items on this list. Even though the others are bigger game-changers in terms of the overall story, it is the death of Dee that is the most shocking.

The story is that series creator Ron Moore and the writing staff agreed that the stunning events of the previous episode (more on that later) had to have some sort of fallout—not everyone could just come to terms with those disappointments emotionally unscathed. The decision was that it would be Lt. Anastasia “Dee” Dualla who would decide that enough was enough, her journey was over, and it was time to end her own life.

Her suicide is abrupt and startling, coming after an evening of happiness with her ex-husband, Lee Adama. The tenderness between them even hints that perhaps they will get back together. Instead, it turns out that Dee is simply finding a last moment of contentment and peace before following through on her resolve not to go on any longer. Her death ends up being one of the series’ most memorable and terrible moments.
