In the very last moments of the original mini-series, audiences are treated to a twist which sets the tone for the whole series: amongst the first group of humanoid Cylons that we see is a copy of Galactica pilot Sharon Valerii. This is quite the reveal—“Boomer,” as she is known, had been one of the central characters of the story so far. She is a trusted pilot, a senior member of Galactica’s crew, and a reimagined version of a familiar character from the original series.

Boomer’s “outing” as a Cylon of the line known as Number Eight sets the stage for many of the storylines that were to come. A lot of attention in the early series is given to her wrestling with her loyalties and her identity. Questions are also raised about what other Cylons agents are living within the Colonial fleet.

Boomer’s story later comes to a sorry conclusion—she falls under the influence of the malevolent Cylon Cavil, turning against humanity and even her own line. Ultimately, she is killed by a fellow Number Eight, “Athena”, who had found what Boomer had failed to—a permanent home amongst Galactica’s crew.
