Having said all that previously, lets not entirely rule out the possibility that the machine gun at the start of Season 5 was in fact not a red hearing at all, and real sh*t is about to hit the fan. An epic gun fight as Walter's last stand for the series would at least be a super-cool way to end the show, but highly difficult to make this seem likely. At the moment I am struggling to think of what else he could need the machine gun for, if not for attempting to kill multiple people... though perhaps this will be used against the Neo Nazi's he befriended in the shows final episode.Though again, if Walter really is considering leading a last front against the DEA, he will probably need some friends on his side, and the Neo Nazi's may be there instead to help him fight. He could however simply need the machine gun in order to pull of some drug related heist or scheme and not need it as a killing weapon at all, though the last episode did end with Walter seemingly giving up the drug trade and starting to be comfortable living a normal life. It really does seem like the last half of Season 5 will instead simply be a cat and mouse game between Walt and Hank, where Hank will unlikely start up business again. A lot of change will have to go down in Hank and Walter's relationship to envisage Walter going to such extreme last measures, although if he really thinks death is upon him whatever he does, maybe he is at the point in his journey where he is so detached from reality that he simple couldn't care less anymore. I still think the machine gun was a red hearing of sorts as I really don't see an epic gun fight battle being a realistic choice for the characters in the show and despite Walter doing some truly terrible things, for the most part his most dreadful actions have kind of been unattached and not direct murders. Watching someone die was horrible perhaps, but Walter didn't really kill Jesse's girlfriend.. and poisoning a child is horrendous, but Walt knew it was fairly likely the boy would survive, so it is not like he shot him or anything. For Walt to actually sit behind a machine gun and shot people to death will be out of character, and we all know that no matter how bad Walter will become, there is a moral center somewhere inside his thick exterior. You would also need to consider how Jesse would fit into this final battle? That said, we didn't actually see Jesse in the flashfoward, so perhaps at this point Jesse has been arrested or in fact even killed by Hank (or even Walter), and Walter is taking out his revenge... or perhaps planning a scheme to break Jesse from prison. What ever the outcome, I for one can't wait to see what the purpose of that machine gun is.
