3. Surprise
Surprise is the episode where Buffy the Vampire Slayer went from a good show about teen drama and supernatural horror to a great one. It's the ultimate turning point in the show, with implications that will stretch until its very end.
In it, Buffy and Angel attempt to keep parts of the Judge away from Spike and Drusilla, and end up spending the night. They have sex, which destroys Angel's curse and causes him to lose his soul.
Beautifully building up the pair's relationship and infusing the drama with heavy action scenes, Surprise spends much of its run powering toward obvious tragedy, the extent of which isn't revealed until the horrifying final scene. From here, Buffy - and its fans - would never be the same again.
