But That's Not REAL Star Trek! 7 Reviews That Judged Star Trek Too Quickly

1. Discovery Isn't Just Asking Fans To Stick With It - It's Asking Them To Pay For The Privilege

Discovery is divisive, yet it is also the flagship show of the streaming service CBS All Access. As such, fans were being asked to pay $5.99/$9.99 to sign up and watch the series in America. While this may have been frustrating but doable, the opening episodes left fans confused.

The series does a hard reset on the Trek universe, existing ten years before Kirk took off on his five-year mission. All of the tech is updated, the Klingons are re-designed and the lens flares are worthy of JJ Abrams.

It was a lot to take in and combined with the subscription fee, people were quick to vent their anger online. Discovery was the first Star Trek series to premiere in the land of Twitter/Reddit/Facebook and to say that the platforms were flooded with bad reviews is underselling it.

The producers listened.

The first season of Discovery, while visually excellent, left people feeling a bit salty with the Klingon war, the mirror universe twist and many of Burnham's...odd....choices. Going into the second season, the show did a soft reboot of itself. The tone became largely more positive with the introduction of Anson Mount's Captain Pike.

Through this character, the show moved closer to the brighter view of the future that previous incarnations had promised. The main focus of the show moved closer to exploration than warfare, though some spectacular space battles still occurred. Discovery may have taken its time to find its feet but can the same not be said of all Star Trek?
