Class: 8 Reasons To Be Excited About The Doctor Who Spin-Off

6. ... And An Intriguing Blend Of Previous Spin-Offs

Class Doctor Who
BBC

Class might offer a new perspective on the Doctor Who universe, yet in style it seems to be an intriguing mix of the two previous spin-offs. Like I just said, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures both had their own angles - the former dealt with slightly edgier themes, while the latter had a young cast. Both of these things, though, are also true of Class.

On the one hand, the high school setting and teenage characters brings to mind SJA. But whereas that show had squeky-clean teens due to being aimed at children, Class will deal with more grown-up adolescent issues. As such, it will borrow something of the emphasis on sex and romance of Torchwood.

Interestingly, reviews of the first episodes are mentioning the levels of violence, gore and scares it contains. Though Doctor Who can certainly be spooky, the limitations of it being a family show mean it can't really push the envelope that bit further into true horror territory. Class, it seems, has no such problem.
