Classic Doctor Who: The 10 Timey-Wimiest Episodes
2. City Of Death (1979)
City of Death is full of the sort of time
travel-playfulness that has become much more common in recent years.
The story features a malfunctioning spaceship in earth’s ancient past, which explodes and propels the alien Scaroth forward in time, fracturing him into twelve different beings all living at different points in history. Communicating telepathically, the different Scaroths work together to develop the technology to travel back in time and prevent the accident from taking place. This involves using their different positions in history to perpetrate art fraud, and tricking a scientist into creating a machine which is seen turning an egg into the skeleton of a chicken and then back again (before it is used to kill the scientist himself).
To make matters worse, it turns out the explosion is what kick-started life on earth, so Scaroth’s plan threatens all humanity. Fortunately, the Fourth Doctor is on hand to prevent this from happening.
