Classic Doctor Who: The 10 Timey-Wimiest Episodes

1. Mawdryn Undead (1983)

In the Timey-Wimiest story of the whole classic era, Mawdryn Undead has the Fifth Doctor re-encountering Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in 1983, only to find his old friend a shell of his former self: a nervous breakdown has led to many of his memories of UNIT being lost.

However, “simultaneously”, the Doctor’s companions meet a more vibrant Brigadier in 1977, and secure his help dealing with a mystery in the TARDIS.

These two stories are told in parallel until the truth is revealed: against all wisdom, the two Brigadiers encounter each other and touch briefly. This causes a massive release of energy that in one moment devastates the younger Brigadier, while re-energizing the elder, and wrapping up the plot in a neat little loop.

Oh, and for good measure, the story also involves Tegan and Nyssa being turned into both old ladies and young children when time travel begins to affect them abnormally!
