Season three is when Ben Chang really started to lose his mind. “Competitive Ecology” features him playing the part of a noir detective trying to solve a mystery. The mystery in question doesn’t exist and the episode is simply allowing the audience to delve deeper into Chang’s damaged and delusional ego.

Hired as a school security guard, Chang tries to diagnose the connection between everything that pops into his mind while courting the leg of a mannequin (yep, you heard correctly). It’s a collection of visual gags, extravagant weirdness and genuinely disturbing glimpses at Ben’s mental state.

This season would see him truly descend into insanity and it’s “Competitive Ecology” that sets it in motion. Furthermore, the study group plot isn’t too bad either.

But what’s so funny? “Arizona backwards is still Arizona. It’s a palamino!”. Ken Jeong’s unsettling voiceover includes some hilarious lines but this one might be the pick of the bunch.
