Community: 10 Reasons Why Season 5 Is MASSIVELY Underrated
1. The Character Departures Are Handled Well
When beloved characters depart a series, leaving the other cast to carry the show without them, it can often be handled in a very clumsy way that can leave a space unfulfilled forever.
In the case of Community, season five saw the final appearances of several main characters (Troy, Pierce and Shirley). Although Shirley does return in scattered spots in the sixth season, she ceased to be a series regular.
In the case of both Pierce and Troy; the characters bowing out the series are written fittingly with the right balance of emotion.
For Pierce, Chevy Chase's problematic behavior and rifts with the other cast members and crew forced his exit to be the least ceremonious, but still handled with some brevity and respect. The character's death felt like one last dig made by Dan Harmon, but did at least present the character as being a mature and grown individual.
As for Troy, the absence of Donald Glover really felt like the show lost some of its heart, but at least Donald was sport enough to stick around for several episodes and really flesh out the story. There is weight to Troy's exit, and after he's gone his departure truly resonates.
