It may be because Rosario Dawson had only a scant number of scenes in season 1 - she's a busy actress, and it shows that she probably only had a few days to fit in her schedule for shooting - or that the Claire character was so underwritten, but the romantic moment between Matt and Claire late in the season didn't have the build-up it required to be effective or even believable. Before then, Matt and Claire had mostly spent their time together talking about his injuries or how he got them (when he wasn't asleep or passed out from the beating he'd just received, that is). The rest of the time would be her speculation as to what this strange guy's deal was, and his opportunity to tell his tale while she listened. It's hardly a recipe for love story of the century. Dawson will be back for season 2, so fingers crossed she'll be around long enough for the writing staff to develop a more credible romance between her and Matt, one that doesn't feel rushed or shoehorned in. Testament to how badly it was handled in season 1 is in how there was more chemistry between the villain and his moll, and that there were probably more people rooting for the bad guy's love interest than the hero's.
