Dexter: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best

This morally questionable official knows so much about the Morgan family you often wonder if he's aware of Dexter's secret. As commanding officer of the Homicide Division, Matthews butts head with Lieutenant María LaGuerta on a daily basis. His political ambition frequently leads to trouble including his burials of evidence and placing blame on LaGuerta for his own errors.

Season 6 reveals Matthews' scandalous night life. With his name turning up in a little black book from a notorious brothel, he finds himself blackmailed into promoting LaGuerta to captain. As if that weren't bad enough for a now deputy chief, Matthews covers up the heroin-caused death of a prostitute he hired. We discover a seedy underbelly of Miami Metro through Matthews' mishaps. Discovering much of the ugly truth through Debra's investigation, we realise how dark and dodgy Harry Morgan's best bud really is.

For all the less than likeable traits and moments Matthews exhibits, he stills enjoys some redeeming features. His friendship with Harry is proof of his loyalty and devotion to those he cares about. Promising to look after Dexter and Debra, Matthews keeps a close, comforting eye on the 2 throughout the series, frequently coming to their aid when needed. Played with a straight-laced conviction by Geoff Pierson, Matthews was an intriguing character that deserved more screen time.
