Dexter: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best

9. Joey Quinn

Dexter Hannah McKay
Showtime

Miami Metro's dodgiest detective is a breath of fresh air during seasons 3 and 4. For the first time, the series takes a look at the implications of a bribe-taking corrupt cop. Mysterious and unpredictable, Quinn has highly questionable dynamics with his informants and Internal Affairs. We want to know more about him but when we do, the explanations are rarely as interesting as the implications.

By season 4, he has replaced James Doakes as the one who suspects Dexter's sinister side. It's a storyline we've seen before and one that carried a billion times more intensity the first time. His romantic endeavours frequently prove to be his professional undoing also (not like he could've known Christine was the Trinity Killer's daughter in fairness) and the character gradually proves inept and self-destructive. His feud with Dexter is done away with via shenanigans with a much older, much more intact Robocop and from there, the writers box him in as Debra's on/off boyfriend.

The Quinn/Debra romance reveals a more sensitive side to the Quinn character. Actor Desmond Harrington infuses the character with an emotional intensity that keeps his topsy turvy plotting compelling. Subtle but effective, his poignant last scene with Dexter in the finale is one of the heavily criticised episode's few high points.

John Cunningham hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
