Doctor Who: 10 Actors Almost Cast As The Doctor (Who Thankfully Weren’t)

1. Hugh David

Hugh David Hugh David was actually offered the role of the first Doctor by his friend, and then caretaker producer, Rex Tucker. Unfortunately for David, Verity Lambert then came in as producer and turned David down. According to Verity, 38 year old David was too youthful for the Doctor she had in mind. This seems odd after seeing the youngest actor to play the role step into the Doctor's shoes. We've seen the Doctor act like a child in wonder because of dinosaurs on a spaceship, but beneath it all lies age and wisdom. Hartnell might not be everyone's favorite Doctor, but he was the first Doctor and his portrayal helped the show achieve iconic status. As a result, he's had some influence over every actor to play the role since €“ whether its 58-year-old Peter Capaldi or 27-year-old Smith. Whether Hugh David would have made a good Doctor or not, Hartnell was what the show needed.
