Doctor Who: 10 Best Moments Of Series 8 So Far

10. The Restaurant Scene - Deep Breath

Series 8 arrived with a bang (after it had been spat out by a dinosaur) with its feature-length opening episode, Deep Breath. As well as providing familiar Victorian hijinks with Vastra, Jenny and Strax and an adventure fit for the silver screen, it also turned out to be a model example of the new style of the series, with longer, talkier scenes and a new emphasis on Clara's character. One moment demonstrates this better than any other, however, and that is the scene where the Doctor and Clara reunite in a restaurant. After arguing among themselves, they realise that they are surrounded by clockwork robots - before being taken to a secret underground space to be harvested for 'spare parts.' Sweeney Todd, eat your heart out. At roughly five minutes in length, this is a fairly long scene for just two people sitting and talking - especially in a show where the principle characters are generally always running. If handled badly it's a moment that could soon outstay its welcome but as it is the scene is very entertaining. At first showcasing Capaldi and Coleman's chemistry as the newer, ruder Doctor and his put-upon companion, it then delivers a classic Moffat moment - the 'the horror's been here all along' gambit. The Doctor may have called Clara an egotist but, if you ask us, both of them are too self-involved if they didn't realise they were dining with a load of ticking robots.
