Doctor Who: 10 Epic Matt Smith Moments Peter Capaldi Won't Top

8. Goodbye, Pond

One of the most heartrending moments in Smith's reign is made so powerful because of his knack for conveying emotion without saying anything at all. It's in these moments after Amy and Rory's deaths that the grief and sorrow threatens to overwhelm the Doctor. The episode comes full circle when Amy, who was sent back into the past to live out her days, writes an afterword in a book that popped up earlier in the show. Hello, old friend, she writes. And here we are. She writes that she's worried about him, and that he should never be alone. And that he should go and visit her as a child, and give her hope, let her know that there's a great story ahead of her. It's a touching scene, with the Doctor sitting in Central Park, surrounded by infinite quiet. Smith's performance is exquisite, underscoring his ability to capture the depth of the Time Lord's character just as well as the quirkiness.
