Doctor Who: 10 Epic Matt Smith Moments Peter Capaldi Won't Top

7. I Just Wanted To Say Hello

Neil Gaiman's first Doctor Who episode, The Doctor's Wife, won a Hugo Award, and it's easy to see why. The plot played with an ambitious concept: taking the TARDIS and making it human. Suranne Jones plays Idris, the woman who becomes the host for the TARDIS, and her scenes with Matt Smith are hugely poignant. It's all fun and games at first, with the Doctor and the TARDIS running hand in hand, flirting, saving the day. But no human body can contain all that power, and before long Idris begins to break down. As the golden energy leaks out of her dying body, she says, "I just wanted to say hello." She vanishes in a shimmer of light, and Smith is left to stand there drying his eyes. Again Smith plays the scene beautifully, offering a delicate performance full of tenderness and fragility. Quite the contrast to some of the bullish moments later on in this list.
