Doctor Who: 10 Epic Matt Smith Moments Peter Capaldi Won't Top

6. Van Gogh's Good Things

Vincent and the Doctor is a charming and brilliant episode tucked neatly into the middle of series five, and it offers a number of cracking scenes. But the best of them is clearly the end, when the Doctor takes Vincent Van Gogh to the future, where he can see his work on display and all the fans coming to see it. As he spins round, taking in the art and the crowds, taking in the colour, he overhears Bill Nighy's character saying, "Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved." The magic of it all overwhelms him, and after he goes back to his time, despite the fact that he still kills himself, Smith's Doctor reflects that all life is a pile of good things and bad things. And they definitely added to Van Gogh's pile of good things.
